RELAY

CRIENA COURT AND RACHEL MACKAY

4.7.25 – 20.7.25

RELAY is a duo exhibition exploring performative acts of dialogue between two distinct yet overlapping practices. The project frames reciprocity not as a seamless exchange but as a generative friction – a space where gestures, materials and bodies meet, resist and reshape one another.

Court’s practice focuses on physical gestures and structure – how the body interacts with material to create traces of movement. Her process-based approach investigates the reciprocity between body and material, making visible the impact of one upon the other. Through sculptural interventions and performative actions, she explores how bodily gestures are recorded, translated and transferred across different media and surfaces.

Mackay’s practice explores the tangible and intangible aspects of bodily experience, positioning the human body as a porous site of exchange; between inside and outside, other bodies and the nonhuman world, while functioning as an archive of memory and history. With a focus on female embodiment, she examines how inhabiting a body is an experience of multiplicity, fragmentation and permeability. Her work shifts between the formal boundaries of sculpture, painting, video and installation, often using materials that echo this fluidity.

Informed by notions of reciprocity as a cyclical, embodied process, RELAY acknowledges that every action impacts another, that relationships – whether human, material or spatial–are dynamic and interdependent. The exhibition explores these ideas through an experimental and iterative approach, allowing the works to shift and transform in response to each other over time.

The exhibition asks: How do these two artists engage in a continuous exchange of movement, form and meaning? How does a gesture reciprocate – from one body to another, from one material to another, from one space to another? This reciprocity occurs not just between the two artists, their bodies and their materials, but also in the space in between, an invisible but potent force that influences how actions take shape. RELAY unfolds through layered interactions, both in the physical traces left by gestures and in the conceptual dialogue that emerges across the space.
